The Tempur® ONE™ Firm is what memory foam mattresses were meant to be – and not the sweaty and mushy quicksand pits that swallow you whole. If you are sensitive to soreness from pressure, prefer to feel like you are floating when you sleep, have exaggerated body contours, or are dominantly a side sleeper, the Tempur® ONE™ is for you.
Most of the full memory foam mattresses we have tried feel stiff at first, but start to swallow you as the memory foam under your body softens in response to body heat. As you sink (and sink) and the surrounding foam rises around you, it starts to feel like you are trapped in bread dough – and often in a non-neutral alignment. After you struggle to climb out of this unsupportive body-shaped hole, the imprint often remains for several minutes, which encourages your body to roll back into it.
The entire Tempur® ONE™ mattress is made of the proprietary “TEMPUR® Material”, which is still essentially a viscoelastic memory foam – but one that is unique to Tempur®. The mattress feels deceptively soft when a palm is pressed into it, but becomes surprisingly buoyant when one lies upon it – almost like Tatalay latex foam. While back-sleeping, the Tempur® ONE™ is able to keep hips buoyed, support the spine in quite a neutral position by conforming around the contours of the body, and allow the shoulders to fall back instead of rolling forwards. For side-sleeping, it accepts the shoulders and hips while filling in and supporting the waist. This ability to behave differently towards different pressures is perhaps due to variation in foam density or composition along its depth.
Compared to most other full memory foam mattresses we’ve tested, the Tempur® ONE™ is already plush to sleep on from the first instance, and also does not soften significantly with body heat and swallow you whole. It also doesn’t leave a body imprint that is hard to get out of – if you change positions during the night, the Tempur® ONE™ mattress floats you in your new position right away. It also has surprisingly decent edge support for a memory foam mattress, although it is hard to tell if this will last with use. Like all memory foam mattresses, motion isolation is almost perfect.
The main difference between the Tempur® ONE™ and hybrid mattresses with a spring support system is that the Tempur® ONE™ disperses pressure so effectively that no particular body part feels any more pressure than another. After a few minutes, this translates into a sensation of “weightlessness” – as if we were floating on a bed filled with thick, viscous gel. This is perhaps because the Tempur® ONE™ has a substantially thicker layer of foam compared to the comfort layers of hybrid mattresses. While it may feel like the most comfortable mattress for sleepers who enjoy the weightless sensation or suffer from pressure-induced soreness, it may not be the best choice for sleepers who find the pressure of a firm spring mattress reassuring.
Because the physical characteristics of foam can change significantly with temperature and the Tempur® ONE™ relies entirely on Tempur® foam for support, the support and firmness of the Tempur® ONE™ may vary significantly especially if you sleep in a non-air conditioned environment. We also opine that a full foam mattress is not the best choice for an non-air conditioned bedroom because of the lack of airflow through the mattress layer, which can cause the mattress to trap heat. The Tempur® ONE™ does come with an option to be equipped with CoolTouch fabric for an additional fee. However, such superficial heat dispersion methods only feel cool for the first few minutes and may not even be felt if you use a mattress protector on your mattress.
The Tempur® ONE™ comes in Medium and Firm, but we found the Medium a little too soft to support the hips after a few minutes.
