The Simmons BeautySleep Discovery I is a mattress for those who prefer something closer to the traditional spring mattresses of old. It utilizes a thin foam comfort layer quilted on top of a pocketed spring support foundation. Because of this thinness of the comfort layer, we found that the Simmons BeautySleep Discovery I allows the body to sink through and sort of rest atop the pocketed springs, which is great for sleepers who find the stubborn firmness of a traditional spring mattress reassuring as they try to fall asleep. At the same time, the comfort layer is just thick enough for one not to feel the individual springs underneath. Even though Simmons rates the BeautySleep Discovery I as a 5 for firmness – which we find to be true of the thin comfort layer alone – the actual sleeping experience feels significantly firmer because of the thinness of of the comfort layer.
For most sleepers who prefer the feel of a hybrid mattress, the inability of the comfort layer to completely fill and support the curvatures of the body may feel foreign and uncomfortable. We also could not achieve neutral spine alignment while side-sleeping.
That said, the suitability of a mattress is highly specific to each individual’s body weight, shape, mass distribution, and sleeping habits! The quality of the Simmons pocketed spring foundation at this price point makes it a great choice for sleepers with gentler body contours or who prefer the stubbornness of a traditional spring mattress. A thinner comfort layer also means that the support of the mattress doesn’t significantly change as the comfort layer degrades, allowing its support to stay consistent for longer. Like all traditional mattresses, the Simmons BeautySleep Discovery I also has excellent edge support.
