This is the Firm version of the Texas model from Sealy’s Posturepedic® Elevate Ultra range, and it is one of the most supportive mattresses we have tested. If you are looking for the best support you can find without consideration for price, the Elevate Ultra Texas Firm is one mattress you have to try.
Contrary to the majority of mattresses that we love, the Sealy Posturepedic® Elevate Ultra range sports an innerspring system rather than pocketed coils as its support layer underneath a plush foam pillow-top. Unlike regular springs, the AlignSupport™ springs are a marvel of engineering that is more compressible along its top most segment but becomes much firmer along its lower segment. The compressible top segment of the springs allow the mattress to still adapt to your body’s contours and support, which overcomes the main downside of innerspring support systems (over-generalized non-contouring support). For heavier parts of the body that sink further down e.g shoulders, hips, the firm lower segment takes over and provides additional pushback. In essence, the variation of springiness along the length of each AlignSupport™ spring enables the Elevate Ultra Texas Firm to provide the exceptional support that adapts to different pressures usually achieved through careful layering of several foam types in other mattresses. One upside to achieving adaptive support through this innovative spring system is that springs tend to stand up to wear and tear much longer than foam comfort layers, so the Elevate Ultra Texas should maintain a consistent quality of support for longer. However, the proprietary technology also comes at a much heftier price tag!
The comfort layer of the Sealy Posturepedic® Elevate Ultra Texas Firm Mattress is a plush layer of polyurethane foam – nothing too fancy as the heavy lifting is done by the AlignSupport™ springs. All our reviewers felt extremely well supported by the mattress and the plush foam was also adequate for pressure-relief as well as side-sleeping. Because its contouring ability comes from its springs, the mattress is able to consistently hold the spine in neutral alignment for an extended duration. This is in contrast to some mattresses reliant on foam layers for contouring support – foam can soften in response to body heat causing some foam mattresses to lose some support after a few minutes of being laid on.
The Sealy Posturepedic® Elevate Ultra Texas Firm Mattress also comes with an Ice-Touch fabric that is cool to initial skin contact. However, in our experience such superficial cooling methods are most effective in the first few minutes, just like holding on to a cool metal bar. Sustained temperature regulation throughout the night depends on whether the foams have thermal-conductive properties and the ventilation through the spring layers of the mattress.
