The King Koil “The Seasons” Mattress is the perfect choice for sleepers after a very specific sleeping surface and want to layer on their own customized comfort layers. As comfort layers usually wear out before the spring foundations, adding your own comfort layers has the additional advantage of significantly extending the life of your mattress, since you can replace just the comfort layers when they wear out. It is also an excellent choice for seniors who grew up sleeping on extra firm mattresses and prefer such a traditional mattress over plush pillow-top ones.
The construction of the King Koil “The Seasons” Mattress is a pocketed spring foundation with a natural latex comfort layer. However, the fill of the comfort layer is quilted into thin diamond-shaped pouches each just a few centimeters thick, and the ribbing in between pouches seems to be in contact with the pocketed spring foundation with no cushioning at all. While this minimal padding is sufficient to make “The Seasons” mattress feel more like soft earth than hard marble and prevent sore spots, it is also not thick enough to fill in the positive curvatures of the spine – especially in the lumbar (lower) back. We felt as if prolonged sleeping on such a firm and rather unyielding surface would lead to spinal flattening over time. Side-sleeping in a neutral spinal alignment will also be nearly impossible.
Nevertheless, the quality and support of the 5-zone pocketed spring support layer really shines! Even without a plush comfort layer, the pocketed springs are able to conform somewhat to neutral spinal curvature and keep the hips buoyed. A comfort layer can be created by strapping a mattress topper on top of the mattress. This DIY approach has several advantages:
- Foam comfort layers usually degrade and lose substantial support even while the pocket sprung support layer works just like new. Mattresses that come with an attached comfort layer will have to be replaced entirely. However, mattress toppers can simply be replaced with new mattress toppers when they lose support – for a fraction of the price of a mattress! This method allows savvy sleepers to take full advantage of the longevity of King Koil mattresses.
- You can customize the comfort layer’s feel to your own desires by using different densities and different foams e.g memory foam, latex etc.
A mattress topper acts just like a removable comfort layer, which will optimize the support provided by the exceptional pocketed springs of “The Seasons” mattress by conforming to the natural curves of our bodies.
