At $349, the VESTERÖY is one of the cheapest pocket spring mattresses you’ll find around. The IKEA VESTERÖY mattress sports a pocketed spring core with a regular polyurethane foam comfort layer, and we found the combination to be the most comfortable among IKEA’s budget models. The IKEA VESTERÖY was definitely supportive to lie on when new and the pocketed spring system does a great job at supporting each part of the body and keeping the hips buoyant.
While the comfort layer has a cozy texture and does a nice job at conforming to the curves of the body, heavier sleepers may compress the comfort layer enough to feel the hard pocketed spring foundation below. One of our heavier reviewers felt that contacting the flat pocketed spring foundation also caused his thoracic (upper) back to flatten when lying on his back, which could lead to postural changes and pain over an extended period of time. However, this can be alleviated to a certain extent with a pillow of adequate height to support the neck and restore natural curvature to the thoracic spine, and should not be a problem for most regular-sized people.
Like the older IKEA HÖVÅG, there also seems to be a little problem with heat retention as it became a little stuffy after laying down for 15 minutes without turning over. This is not unexpected even in pricier mattresses that use such plush polyurethane foam comfort layers and do not also incorporate heat-dispersion technology.
IKEA’s mattresses are known to have a problem with durability, wearing down in just a few years, and the materials did feel a little less premium than the other mattresses we reviewed. Granted, for the price of other quality mattresses you could probably purchase the mattress several times over. However, it is important to remember you’ll also have to pay shipping for this hefty item each time you purchase, which can come up to almost $100 per delivery. There’ll also be intermittent periods where your mattress is wearing down that you experience poor sleep. It is better to invest in one quality mattress you can rely on for quality sleep every night than one that you have to worry about replacing every now and then, especially when you are exhausted.
However, if you require a mattress with above-average ergonomics only for a year or two and do not want splurge, the IKEA VESTERÖY gets our stamp of approval as a mattress that punches way way above its price point!
