The Azure Cool Max Hybrid mattress is packaged with a really impressive set of features for its budget price point. You’d be lucky to get a pocketed spring foundation with a foam comfort layer below $500 – many mattresses in this price range only have simple innersprings. However, the Azure Cool Max Hybrid sports four layers of foam atop the durable customized support of a pocketed spring base.
With budget mattresses, the firm pocketed spring base can usually be felt through what is usually a single thin layer of polyurethane foam, which can create uncomfortable pressure points. However, the combination of the high-density foam and bouncy natural latex completely shields the body from feeling the hard spring foundation – even when side-sleeping.
Above the latex is what feels like a thin layer of memory foam and soft polyurethane. The memory foam is not thick enough to impart a sinking “marshmallow” feel to the mattress – the mattress still feels like fluffy tatalay latex to lie on – but it does help prevent light-to-moderate motion transfer. Similar to higher-end mattresses, the memory foam used is infused with a thermally-conductive gel, which should help dissipate body heat at night, though we wonder if the final layer of soft polyurethane will affect this.
Lastly, the bare mattress surface feels really cool to touch thanks to the ice silk fabric used in its quilting. It should be noted that ice silk fabrics usually require direct skin contact to feel cool (like touching metal in an air-conditioned room), so the effect may be diminished when protectors and bedsheets are put on. However, its ability to conduct dissipate heat remains even if the instant coolness cannot be felt.
The Azure Cool Max Hybrid really does feel like a much more expensive mattress to lie on. The pocketed spring foundation and well-thought layering keeps the hips buoyant, conforms to contours in the back, and keeps the spine aligned as well as relaxed. Extremely fussy or broad-shouldered side-sleepers might notice that the mattress seems to offer ever so slightly more resistance to the shoulders – but perfectly adaptive support is a feature only a few of the very best mattresses will have, and it may not be noticeable to most sleepers. Compared to the Azure Spinal Care, the Cool Max Hybrid also has significantly better edge support.
